The historical city of Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte was declared the new capital of Sri Lanka on the 29th of January 1985. Due to its close proximity to the commercial capital of Colombo, it’s role as one of Colombo’s satellite cities and as the administrative capital of Sri Lanka and the location of the new parliamentary complex, it has experienced rapid urbanization and urban sprawl.
Despite a developed road network and basic infrastructure facilities, the city has not achieved its full potential in a sustainable manner: 30% of our fellow citizens still live in poverty, public health risks are rampant, the rich biodiversity of the city is slowly dying and till now authorities have failed to build what could become one of the country’s most valued national heritage sites.
The city needs a clear, progressive plan to become a sustainable, modern city that becomes a case study to the country and our region.
